If economy and longevity are what you are looking for, then look no further. Pressure treated lumber has been the best selling decking material for decades and still is today. The wood is chemically treated to protect against decay, fungus, and wood-boring insects. It is stain-able and can withstand the abuses of traffic and weather. With the proper maintenance, you can expect your pressure treated deck to last 25 to 30 years.

Cedar lumber is typically chosen for its natural beauty. Due to the wood's sap, the wood is inherently water resistant and less susceptible to rot. Because it does not readily absorb moisture, it is less likely to warp or split over time. It is however a soft wood, so it is vulnerable to scratches from things like dogs and patio furniture. The cost of cedar is moderate; it will be more expensive than pressure treated lumber, but less than composite. A cedar deck can be expected to last 15 to 20 years. If the naturalistic look is a high priority, then cedar is for you!

Composite decking is a combination of primarily wood fibers and recycled plastic. The main reason people choose composite decks is for the minimal upkeep required to preserve them. Although wood decks are far cheaper up-front, their yearly maintenance costs are significantly higher. Composite decks are also splinter-free and slip-resistant, making them safer than wood. The product has come a long way in recent years, and most composites now have the ability to reflect the beauty of natural woods. The lifespan of a composite deck is expected to be at least 25 years. If you would like to mitigate maintenance hassles, then investing in a composite deck could be the right choice for you.
